MORGANTOWN — WVU wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton will forgo his final year of eligibility and declare for the NFL Draft, he announced on Twitter Wednesday afternoon.
“I came to WVU in 2018 eager to continue the family tradition of suiting up for the Old Gold and Blue,” Ford-Wheaton wrote. “Through my years at WVU, I’ve crossed paths with many different coaches who have taught me valuable lessons on the field and off, that have developed me into a better player and more importantly, a better person.”
Ford-Wheaton is a third-generation Mountaineer, following his grandfather, Garrett Ford Sr., and uncle, Garrett Ford Jr., who were both running backs at WVU.
A three-year starter, Ford-Wheaton set career highs in all major categories this season, including receptions (62), receiving yards (675) and receiving touchdowns (seven). He leaves WVU with 131 career receptions for 1,666 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Ford-Wheaton redshirted his first year in Morgantown in 2018 and had one year of eligibility remaining from the COVID blanket waiver the NCAA handed out in 2020.
The 2023 NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 27. The last WVU wide receiver to be taken in the draft was in 2019 when the Seattle Seahawks selected Gary Jennings in the fourth round.
