Nina Lorraine (Owens) Statler, 94, of Pentress, passed away Friday, Nov. 25 at Stonerise in Morgantown. Nina was born April 1, 1928, the daughter of the late Daniel and Hazel Owens, of Daybrook.
She is preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Jesse Junior “J.J.” Statler and leaves behind their cherished family, Rebecca and Ken Moore, Benjamin and Bonnie Jo Statler, Daniel and Kathy Statler and Samuel and Nancy Statler; along with grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Bartley and Tammi Moore (Kaden, Riley and Drew), Bethany and David Wisman (Jacob and Jessica), Julie and William Sheppard (Macon, Owen and Grant), Benjamin II and Jill Statler, (Breanna), B.J. Statler, Dustin and Johnetta Statler (Daxtin), Lauren and Scott McKillop, (Harper and Weston) and Zackary Statler.
Nina is also survived by her sister, Lila Haught and her husband Pete, of Wana. She was preceded in death by her two brothers and their wives, Terry and Karen Owens and Billy and Glenna “Toots” Owens, of Daybrook.
A graduate of Clay-Battelle High School and Fairmont State College, Nina held a bachelor’s degree in education. She loved being a teacher and taught for more than 20 years at Daybrook Elementary. She was known for caring about her students and enjoyed communicating with them throughout their lives. Nina was a member of the Silver Haired Legislature, and one of her favorite pastimes was playing cards with a group of lifelong friends at the Blacksville Senior Center, where she was a proud member. Nina often bragged about the success of her children and grandchildren and never missed an opportunity to tell everyone how proud she was of her beautiful family.
Hastings Funeral Home will conduct cremation services at her request. Nina’s family plans to hold a celebration of her life at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor are directed to the Clay Battelle Area Senior Center, P.O. Box 176, Blacksville, WV 26521.
