Mooney’s 2nd District landslide biggest of his West Virginia Congressional career

MORGANTOWN – Republican Rep. Alex Mooney won the biggest landslide of his West Virginia Congressional career Tuesday night, receiving 65.62% of the vote over Democratic candidate Barry Wendell.

Mooney received 159,379 votes to Wendell’s 83,489 (34.38%).

Both were vying to represent the new 2nd Congressional District, covering 26 northern counties including both panhandles.

Mooney now represents the current 2nd District, which spans 17 counties across the center of the state.

He was first elected in 2014, winning 47.08% of the vote. His percentages varied in subsequent elections: 2016, 58.18%; 2018, 53.96%; 2020, 63.08%.

Mooney was part of Tuesday’s West Virginia red wave that saw the GOP expand its supermajorities in the state House and Senate, and his colleague Carol Miller take 66.72% of the vote in the new 1st Congressional District.

Secretary of state figures show that Wendell won only one county: Monongalia, with 14,082 votes (54.42%) to Mooney’s 11,794 (45.58%).

In neighboring Preston, Mooney won 6,233 votes (70.72%) to Wendell’s 2,581 (29.28%).

Neighboring Marion was Mooney’s worst showing outside of Mon, but still a landslide, with 8,767 votes (56.49%) to Wendell’s 6,753 (43.51%).

While Grant County has fewer voters, it was Mooney’s best performance, with 3,028 votes (87.59%) to Wendell’s 429 (12.41%).

Miller won every county in her three-way 1st District race. In Kanawha County, she took 55.68% of the vote compared to 40.85% for the Democrat and 3.47% for the Independent.

All numbers are unofficial pending canvassing.
