MORGANTOWN — Coming into the 2022 football season, Morgantown High football senior transfer Drew Boczek was looking to play for his third different school in the last four years.
Despite the unfamiliar territory, coaches and some teammates, the former Trinity and Clay-Battelle quarterback/free safety has stepped on campus at MHS and adjusted with no problem.
Before strapping up for MHS head coach Sean Biser and the Mohigans, Boczek played two years at Trinity, then one year at Clay-Battelle. Ultimately the 5-foot-10, 175-pound senior landed at MHS, a decision he said has helped him reach another level.
“The transition to MHS for me couldn’t have gone any better,” he said. “All the players and coaches have been welcoming and it is enjoyable playing in a program that is run like a college program. I was very fortunate to have some success in Class A, including making all-state, but I believe I needed to show that I could compete at the AAA level and maximize the caliber I play at.”
Not all was unfamiliar for Boczek when he began practice with the Mohigans, as some of his now-teammates have been former teammates in the past. Players like starting junior quarterback Maddox Bowers and defensive lineman Koma Neal have played with Boczek previously as kids.
“I have known most of the players for years as we played travel basketball and pee-wee/flag football together since kindergarten,” Boczek said.
“Drew is a great teammate and a big factor to our defense so far,” Neal said of his not-so-new teammate. “I’ve known him since we were little kids and he’s always been a hard worker and someone I could depend on. With him transferring this year, it’s helped us out a lot by being able to give some of our running backs a break on the defensive side. The more depth we have, the better we play.”
That depth has done just what Neal said it has through the first two weeks for MHS, as the defense has only allowed six total points scored by its opponents (zero to South Charleston and six to Bridgeport).
Boczek said he’s really noticed how much the team has bought-in to Biser and his staff since he arrived with the team back in March, and it is being reflected on the field.
“They have high expectations as a coaching staff and high expectations of us as players, which I believe will provide us an opportunity to have a special season as long as we stay focused, improve every week, and continue to see coach’s vision,” Boczek said.
MHS is 2-0 on the season and had week three off before hitting the road for a game against Hedgesville on Friday.
“I have an opportunity to play football at somewhere at the next level now,” Boczek said. “Which is a dream of mine.”
