MORGANTOWN — Just over a week away from the Pitt game, WVU head coach Neal Brown made it clear Monday he is not ready to announce who will start at quarterback for the Mountaineers in the Backyard Brawl on Sept. 1.
“We feel really good about our present and future. I’m not trying to be coy about it. I’ll announce the starter before the game,” Brown said. “There’s not been a final decision.”
However, Brown did say the coaches have a good idea of who will win the job and a decision may come by the end of this week, which is the end of fall camp. Game and Pitt prep will begin Friday, a week ahead of the Mountaineers’ showdown on a Thursday night at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh.
In order, Brown said true freshman Nicco Marchiol is progressing well after getting a lot of reps during spring practice and fall camp, and “it’s good to see. The game is really slowing down for him.”
Garrett Greene is maturing, but still needs to work on his decision-making. Brown also said Greene can make all the throws and his arm strength is improving, all while getting faster. Greene has had some of the highest GPS numbers on the team during camp.
JT Daniels is experienced and very mature, but most important, his timing is improved since he arrived over the summer.
Goose Crowder is slow and steady, always consistent. He knows what to do and throws a very catchable ball.
“All of them have some ups, but all of them have also thrown some balls to the defense,” Brown said. “The longer you go in fall camp, the harder it is on offenses because the defense has seen what you are.
“But I’m pleased with them and I’m confident in our present situation, and I’m confident about the future of those guys, too.”
