MORGANTOWN – The Post 2 baseball team couldn’t hold off a strong batting lineup of the Pennsylvania state champions and a late surge gave Philipsburg a 5-1 victory to kick off the Mid Atlantic Regional at Dale Miller Field.
Despite the outcome it was Morgantown that took the lead first in the bottom of the second inning. Left fielder Zach Brennan tripled when the center fielder lost the ball in the air, allowing Brennan to hustle safely to third.
He would score the very next pitch when Tommy Montague grounded out to the shortstop, making it 1-0 in favor of the regional hosts.
Caleb Cottle, who has been red hot on the mound for Post 2, got the start. He pitched a decent game on the mound and held the Post 437 offense scoreless through three innings. However, in the top of the fourth with a runner on second, Zach Witherow singled to tie the game at one run each.
Philipsburg would stay hot in the fifth after Morgantown went scoreless in the bottom of the fourth inning. Michael Kitko broke the deadlock with an two-RBI single, giving his team the 3-1 advantage that they wouldn’t give up.
Two more runs would be added by Zach Tiracora to make the lead 5-1 on the very next batter.
The game would end the same way with Post 437 winning over Morgantown Post 2 5-1 in the opening round of the American Legion Mid-Atlantic Regional.
Morgantown will go on to play Delaware Veterans tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Dale Miller Field.
