MORGANTOWN — Less than 24 hours after defeating Berkeley Post 14 4-1 in a very defense-heavy game, Morgantown Post 2 (14-14) and Post 14 returned to action against one another at Dale Miller Field on Saturday. This time, Post 14 would take the victory by a score of 11-5 after the Hornets pulled away late in the game.
Caleb Cottle got the start for Post 2, while Dillon Stevens would take the mound to begin the game for Post 14. Like the game on Friday, Saturday’s contest began with both pitchers getting a lot of outs without allowing many baserunners. Through three full innings we would remain scoreless as both teams prevented the other from taking the lead.
Then Post 14 flipped a switch to begin the fourth inning. To open the scoring, Stevens helped support his own cause on the mound when he hit a hard single to left field that gave Post 14 a 1-0 lead halfway through the game.
The next batter would lay down a bunt which was fielded by Aaron Forbes, however no one was on first base to allow Forbes to throw the runner out, loading the bases for the Hornets with no outs.
Next up was Ryan Bubb, and like Stevens hit a laser toward left that took a huge hop in the dirt, throwing Post 2 shortstop Cody Thomas off balance and causing him to drop the ball. Two runs would score on the play to make the lead 3-0. Two more runs would be tallied before Morgantown was able to stop the bleeding.
To begin the bottom of the fourth, two quick outs would be registered for Post 14. Zach Brennan then stepped to the plate for Post 2, looking to make a difference after a tough outing Friday. The MHS graduate and Potomac State commit sent a ball high over the left field fence, scoring two runs and cutting the deficit to three runs, 5-2.
Dominic Colasante would relieve Caleb Cottle to begin the fifth, and as he has done a few times recently, got the job done for his team. Three straight outs would give Post 2 some much-needed momentum going into the dugout.
With the 7, 8, and 9 batters coming up, Post 2 was desperate for something productive. Brady McNew doubled to lead off the inning. Then much like Friday night, Post 2 catcher Park Croyle came through at the plate, doubling to center field and scoring McNew to make the game 5-3.
After Kason Nealy walked and Jacob Kennell reached on an error, Forbes came to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Nealy and tying the game at 5.
With a tie game going into the top of the sixth and the momentum on the side on Morgantown, Post 14 came to the plate looking to continue the scoring.
They would do just that on a line drive to left field. Jacob Kennell misplayed the ball allowing it to roll to the wall and giving Post 14 two more runs to lead again 7-5.
After a scoreless sixth, Morgantown’s comeback would come up just short. Post 14 added three more runs in the top of the seventh to pull away with its largest lead of the night at 11-5, which would also be the final score.
Post 2 finish the regular season with a record of 14-14, after being 5-11 at the end on June. Morgantown won nine of its last 12 games as well and will host multiple postseason rounds at Mylan Park. Times for games will be announced soon.
