No WVU players picked in NFL draft, first time in 15 years

MORGANTOWN — For the first time since 2007, WVU did not have a player picked in the NFL draft, which concluded Sunday evening.

Although no one was picked within the 262-pick draft, with just six participants during pro day in late March, it was a long shot for any to be picked between running back Leddie Brown, safeties Alonzo Addae, Sean Mahone and Scottie Young, and specialists Evan Staley and Tyler Sumpter.

With that, the undrafted free agent market was hot when the final pick was made.

Brown signed with the Los Angeles Chargers, hoping to make the roster. The Chargers have three RBs on the roster right now, including Austin Ekeler, Joshua Kelley and Larry Roundtree III. They also selected Texas A&M’s Isaiah Spiller in the fourth round.

Brown ran for 2,888 in four seasons with WVU as the primary running back the last two seasons. He also scampered for 27 touchdowns the last four seasons, ultimately opting to sit out of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl last season to prepare for the draft.

Mahone, Addae and Young made up the back end of another productive season for the Mountaineers, who finished 6-7, a year ago.

Mahone signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, while Addae inked with the Arizona Cardinals. Young had not signed as of late Saturday night.

Sumpter and Staley were also unsigned as of Saturday night.

Chandler-Semedo picks Colorado

Former WVU linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo announced Saturday on Twitter he was headed to Colorado after spending the last four seasons with the Mountaineers.

Chandler-Semedo announced after last season he was going to use his free COVID free to return to WVU, but a month later announced he was going to enter the transfer portal.

He started at Mike linebacker last season, finishing with 110 tackles. In his place, Lee Kpogba has taken the reins during spring practice and is expected to start at Mike linebacker when the season begins.
