Walter Stokes

Walter George Stokes, 95, of Morgantown, formerly of Delmont, Pa., passed away on Monday, April 11, 2022, at Stonerise Morgantown. He was born on June 5, 1926, in Burrell Township, Pa., a son of the late Clair Stokes and Nancy Muir.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 39 years, Floyde (Young) Stokes; children, Edward C. Stokes (Judy), of Delmont, Pa., and Polly E. DeLange, of Parma, Ohio; stepchildren, Susan Dotson (Lyn), of Morgantown, and Stephen Sharpe (Tina), of Westminster, Md.; grandchildren: Brian E. Stokes (Paula), of Davidson, N.C., Jennifer L. Perry (James), of Washington, D.C., Stephanie Jackson, of Melbourne, Fla., Georgia Raven (John), of N. Ridgeville, Ohio, Meredith Budinsky (Cole), of Avon, Ohio, Ben Dotson (Kelly), of Houston, James Sharpe, of Ellicott City, Md., and Emily Mabe (Chris), of Hampstead, Md.; great-grandchildren: Delaney and Trevor Stokes, Zachary, Claire, Henry and Ella Perry, Bo Allen and Andrew Raven, Eleanor and Mikey Mabe and Daniel Dotson; brothers, James, Raymond and Lawrence Stokes; sister, Mary Stokes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Walter is preceded in death by brother, LeRoy Stokes and sisters, Stella Kerr, Jean Beck, Louise Dobbins and Nancy Milks.

Walter served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Pensacola in the Pacific Theater. He worked throughout the years and was considered an exceptional mechanic retiring as the Service Manager at Kunkle’s Motors in Delmont, Pa.

Walter was a member of the Suncrest United Methodist Church. He loved to play guitar, especially with family. He thoroughly enjoyed woodworking and tinkering with motors and machinery.

Walter was never happier than when he and Floyde spent time at their “log house” in Clearfield County, Pa. They loved hosting the wiener roast at the annual Young Family Reunion.

In accordance with his wishes, Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with cremation arrangements.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 10 a.m. until the time of memorial service at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 20 with the Rev. Mike Estep officiating.
