John Hargis

John Thomas Hargis, 77, of Morgantown, passed away at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital on Thursday, March 10, 2022. He was born on Jan. 12, 1945, in Bishop, Calif., a son of the late Jess and Hannah (Kellstrom) Hargis.

John served in the Navy aboard USS L. McCormick during the Vietnam War. He retired from Greer Limestone as a diesel mechanic. In his pastime, he enjoyed gardening, fishing and playing guitar on his porch with a beer in hand. He also thoroughly enjoyed car rides with his sons and grandson.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Linda Hargis; sons, John D. Hargis and wife Amy and Steven “Boomer” D. Hargis and companion Mary Rogers; grandchildren, Morgan Hargis and fiance Tyler Stone, Adam Hargis and girlfriend Natalie Dixon and Emily Hargis; sister, Carol Dunson, from Colorado; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Tim and Trudy Sylvester; sister and brother-in-law, Lorna and Tom Odekirk; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by Betty Bane, who raised him from childhood, and brother-in-law, Gary Kidder.

Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown, from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, March 13, and from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 14, with Pastor Kevin Cain officiating. He will be buried at WV National Cemetery at a later date.
