Billie Kay Cole (nee Shuman), 89, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning, Feb. 20, 2022. Billie was born in Wileyville, Wetzel County, on Nov. 13, 1932. She grew up in Rivesville and Fairmont among family and friends in diverse and nurturing communities.
She married Burhl Kenneth Cole, also a native of Wetzel County, on Aug. 22, 1953. During 68 years together, Billie and Burhl were life partners in every way, from having a family to owning and operating a business, Cole Equipment and Supply Company in Fairmont, for almost 40 years. They and their son, Jay, resided in Deerfield Estates, where they were fortunate to have wonderful friends and neighbors.
Early in her career, Billie was proud to serve as the office manager for Prudential Insurance Company’s Fairmont office, where she made friends and colleagues she cherished throughout her life.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for 70 years. She appreciated the professional and personal connections she developed among her sorority sisters.
Billie’s favorite activity was reading books. She passed her love of reading and books on to her son, Jay. She also enjoyed watching birds, surfing the Internet, cooking comfort food casseroles, and spending time with family.
Billie is survived by her husband Burhl, her son Jay, and Jay’s wife, Lisa, whom Billie loved and thought of as a daughter. She was also grateful for developing loving connections later in life with Lisa’s family.
Billie was preceded in death by her parents, Thistle and Fern Shuman; a sister, Rose Shuman Satterfield; and a brother, Tom Shuman.
In accordance with Billie’s wishes, memorial arrangements will be private. For anyone wishing to remember Billie, her family asks them to consider donating to the Union Rescue Mission of Fairmont in lieu of flowers.
