Items can be customized and finished to match the customer’s home décor
KINGWOOD — If you are looking for a special item for your home or searching for a unique gift, Humble Bee Works is your one-stop shop.
Melissa Fultz said her shop came into existence after she built a dry sink for her home. A dry sink is a piece of furniture common in homes before the invention of indoor plumbing. Typically it consists of a cabinet with a slightly recessed top, made to hold a basin and pitcher for water.
“I was looking for a dry sink, and I found they were pricey,” she said. “They didn’t look that difficult to make, so I built one. It was the first thing I built.”
Fultz said after finishing the dry sink, she started building other small items in her garage.
“I built something for my daughter, she showed it to her friend. Her friend asked me to build something for her,” she said.
After that, Fultz said requests for her home-built items snowballed.
“We had the opportunity to expand the gym (Mind, Body, Soul) but we didn’t need all of the space for that,” she said. “My husband suggested I open a gift shop, so I could show people some of the things I had built.”
Fultz said finding a name for her gift shop wasn’t easy. She wanted a name with the word bee in it.
“I was chatting with my niece and said I would like to have something with bee in it because my name, Melissa, means honeybee,” she said. “She was the one who suggested Humble Bee.”
Fultz said along with her handmade items she added her daughter Abby’s farmhouse sets and candles, and some antique items to the inventory.
“Some of the items we offer are home décor, antique pieces, candles, candle melts, unique and one-of-a-kind pieces,” she said.
One such item is an old door used as backing for a stand. Painted in the top panel of the door is the saying — Grateful, thankful, blessed.
Another item is an antique farm cabinet, with three shelves on the top half and drawers in the bottom.
If color or size is a problem, Humble Bee items can be customized and finished to match the customer’s home décor.
“If a customer has a certain project in mind, let me know,” a sign in the shop reads, “I may be able to build it. I just need an idea and measurements.”
Fultz said when customers come to her shop, they are sure to find something special and a friendly atmosphere.
“A lot of people say this is a very cozy place to shop,” she said.
