Marilyn Jean Smith, 92, of Morgantown, passed away on Dec. 13, 2021, at her home surrounded by her family.
She was born on Sept. 16, 1929, the daughter of the late James Emery and Myrtle Nellie (Miller) Deaki.
Jean was a professional glass cutter by trade and worked at both Sacco and Gentile Glass factories. She was also an avid, life-long bowler and regularly competed at both Sycamore and Suburban bowling allies. More than anything though, she enjoyed traveling and taking trips with her many friends, especially to the beach and Europe.
Jean was a long-standing member of Spruce Street United Methodist Church and was also a member of the United Methodist Women. Additionally, she was a member of the Mt. Azalea Garden Club and the Wakoma Chapter 52, Order of the Eastern Star. Jean was also responsible for starting the first ever Brownie and Girl Scout troop in Westover.
She is survived by her children, Harriet Simons and her partner Martin Mazzella, and Harry Dale “Dink” Smith II and his wife Goldie; five grandchildren: Nicholas Simons and his wife Annie, Harry Dale “Tad” Smith III, Lindsey Creekmore, Tony Dalton and Raymus Dalton and his wife Haley; seven great-grandchildren: Tilden James Simons, Ellie Lynn Simons, Harry Dale Smith IV, Libby Smith, Raylee Jean Dalton, Josie Alana Dalton and Katlin Creekmore; her siblings, Zelda Laurita and John Deaki; and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Harry Dale Smith, and her siblings, Emery Deaki, Steve Takacs and Matilda Takacs Gerwig.
A graveside service will be held at East Oak Grove Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 17 with Pastor Casper Dalton Jr. officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be made in her memory to Spruce Street United Methodist Church, 386 Spruce St., Morgantown, WV 26505.
