MFD responds to fire at University Ave. home

At about 11:22 p.m. Sunday, the Morgantown Fire Department responded to a small, smoldering fire in an apartment building at 2725 University Ave.

The building owner partially put out the fire with an extinguisher after hearing a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke in the apartment and finished extinguishing the fire.

The fire caused an estimated $25,000 in damages. The apartment occupant had left for work prior to the fire. Morgantown fire marshals have determined the fire was caused by spontaneous ignition of recently laundered clothing items.

Arnettsville Public Library hosts book sale

 The Arnettsville Public Library will host a Bag of Books for a Buck Sale throughout December during library hours.

The library’s collection of used books features adult fiction, children’s books, cookbooks and many more varieties. Fill up a grocery bag with as many books as you can for  $1.

 The library is in the former Arnettsville Elementary School building, 4120 Fairmont Road. The book sale hours are noon-6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays and noon-3 p.m. Fridays.

Shop for holiday gifts at Arthurdale Heritage

The Craft Shop at Arthurdale Heritage in Preston County is open from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Saturday through Dec. 23 for holiday shopping. The shop features handmade items from regional artisans.

 Online shopping is  available at arthurdaleheritage.org. Personal shopping is available at 304-864-3959. Proceeds benefit the artisans and Arthurdale Heritage’s preservation projects.

Kingwood State Police taking donations

 The Kingwood detachment of the West Virginia State Police will accept donations of canned goods and new, unwrapped toys for the annual State Troopers for West Virginia Needy campaign, which  closes Wednesday.

Donations can be dropped off at the detachment, 50 J.T. Brammer Lane, just off W.Va. 26 in Kingwood.

The toys and food will assist with the Salvation Army and Food for Preston to benefit local families in need.

Volunteers needed to help place wreaths

After a brief ceremony conducted by Fred L. Jenkins, the Elizabeth Ludington Hagans-Col. John Evans Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and volunteers will place wreaths on all veterans’ graves at Oak Grove and Lawnwood cemeteries at noon Saturday. Volunteers are needed.

Those who know of anyone who does not want a wreath of remembrance placed on a loved one’s grave may call Brenda Shinkovich at 304-278-5573.
