Rowena Louise (Britton) Mersing, 65 of Terra Alta, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 2021. Born Aug. 24, 1956, in Rowlesburg, she was the daughter of the late Harris Glenden and Edna Louise (Taylor) Britton.
Rowena held a master’s degree in social work from West Virginia University. She spent her career helping people as a patient advocate for Hospice and a court advocate for the Rape and Domestic Violence Center. She graduated from Terra Alta High School in 1974.
Rowena loved cooking and baking with her grandchildren. She could always be found laughing or listening to music, or dancing around the kitchen. She was an active member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed playing softball. She loved reading and learning and her kindness and strength were inviolable.
Rowena is preceded in death by her husband Clyde D. Mersing Jr., and her father. She is survived by her mother; her daughters, Jana (Brian) Hammerle, Jessica Mersing and Jamie Mersing; her son, Andrew (Amanda) Mersing; her grandsons, J.J. Burns and Benjamin Mersing; her granddaughters, Claire and Nora Hammerle; and her great-grandchildren, Maeryn Burns and Max Mersing. She is also survived by her siblings and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A private memorial service is being held for the family.
