Julia Pitrolo Mainella, 97, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2021. She was born in Grant Town, Nov. 25, 1923, to Joseph Pitrolo and Catherine Basile Pitrolo. She was the youngest of five children and their only daughter.
She was preceded in death by Louis Mainella, her much loved husband of 48 years. Also preceding her in death were her son-in-law Blaine Kevin Myers; her beloved brothers Paul, Jimmy, Anthony and Johnny; their wives Myra, Lucille and Becky; and their many children.
Julia is survived by her son Tom Mainella and his wife Joyce of Fairmont and by her daughter Jane Mainella Myers of the Rock Lake community.
She was a nurturing grandmother to Thomas Joseph Mainella II, of Charleston, and Leslie Grace Mainella and Julia Claire Myers, of Fairmont. She is also survived by two great-grandsons, Thomas Mainella III and Oliver Thorn, both of Fairmont.
Julia attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1945, earning her degree in accounting and English literature. She began work as an accountant with Pitrolo Pontiac and remained fully involved in the family car dealerships.
Julia was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Church for more than 60 years, where she faithfully served as a member of The Altar and Rosary Society, The St. Francis Cabrini Guild and the St Teresa’s Circle.
She began golfing Green Hills Country Club in 1960 and later, at the Fairmont Field Club, where she won several tournaments and a few championships. She played for many years at Lakeview Country Club and with the Mountaineer League Golf Association. Golf was her passion.
She played bridge with the same group of friends for more than 45 years, well past the time she could play this notoriously difficult card game. But her dear (Blood Sister) friends took gentle care of her.
Julia loved math, appreciated poetry and threw fabulous parties, making it look easy. She spent her summers at Rock Lake for many years, where she was active in the community.
Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Av., Fairmont, on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. The Catholic Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church with Fr. Joseph Konikattil as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
Everyone attending the visitation and funeral is asked to please wear a mask.
