Jasper Sanders

Jasper Silas “Jack” Sanders, 85, died at home on Friday, Oct. 15, 2021.

Jack was born on Sanders Hill near Tunnelton, on March 28,1936, a son of the late Ray and Daisy (Uphold) Sanders.

Jack graduated from Rowlesburg High School, Class of 1954. He served nine years in the West Virginia Army Reserves. Jack was a graduate of the Alderson Broaddus University of Hard Knocks Class of 1992. He was named a West
Virginia History Hero in 2009 by the WV Division of Culture and History.

He was co-owner-manager of Sanders Brothers Lumber in Rowlesburg, a family operated business for over 62 years. The Company was selected as the 1996 Preston County Small Business of the Year. Sanders Brothers Lumbar was also recognized by the West Virginia Department of Forestry as the 1999 Outstanding Large Sawmill of the Year. After his retirement in 2001, he spent many enjoyable hours working in his woodshop and donated many handcrafted items to various organizations.

He was a Methodist by faith and was a 50-plus year member of Christ United Methodist Church of Rowlesburg. He was Past Master of Rowlesburg AF & AM #165 and Past Patron of Rowlesburg OES Chapter #127. He belonged to the Osiris Shrine and was selected Shriner of the Year, Morgantown Shrine Club in 2007 and 2011. Jack was a founding member of the Preston County Shrine Club. He served one six-year term on the Preston County Board of Education. Jack was a 50-year member of the Eagles Club in Kingwood.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years Mary Alice (Liston) Sanders, three children, Kathy Tasker and husband Barney, of Kingwood, Kelly Roberts and husband Lloyd, of Williamstown, and Richard and wife Kelley, of Williamstown; six grandchildren, Brandon Pyles and wife Penny, of Rowlesburg, Andrea Taylor and husband Judd, of Arthurdale, Jennifer Forman and husband Jared Forman, of Bridgeport, David Roberts, of Tysons Corner, Va., Brian Roberts of Lansing, Mich., and Blake Van Kirk, of Pittsburgh; three great-grandchildren Cameron Pyles, Levi Forman and Luca Forman; brother, Sam Sanders and wife Esther, of Rowlesburg; and sister Glenda Gabel, of Long Beach, Calif.

He is preceded in death by parents, Ray and Daisy Sanders; father- and mother-in-law, Howard and Shirley Liston; sister, Wanda Joyce Pyles; brothers-in-law, Robert Pyles, Fred Liston and Keith Gabel; and sister-in-law, Emmalee Sanders.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory to Jack to Christ Untied Methodist Church and sent to the Trustees of CUMC, P.O. Box 554 Rowlesburg, WV 26425.

A graveside service will be held in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20, with Pastor Kevin Keplinger officiating.
