MORGANTOWN — Tim Thomas, owner of Sweet Southern Smoke, has been providing Morgantown with family recipes and down-home hospitality since Oct. 2020.
The restaurant offers a full menu of ribs, briskets, pork, chicken, and smoked sausage. There is also a wide variety of side options, ranging from mac and cheese, corn bread, baked beans, collard greens, French fries, and sweet potato fries.
The Earl L. Core Road eatery also provides outdoor seating, to-go orders and catering.
“It’s different from any barbecue around,” said Tim Thomas, owner of Sweet Southern Smoke. “We add our own flare and love to it.”
Sweet Southern Smoke will celebrate its one-year anniversary this month with live music and special offers on the menu.
“I want to thank the people of Sabraton and West Virginia for their support,” Thomas said. “We wouldn’t be here without their support.”
Thomas learned to cook barbecue from his father, while his mother and grandmother taught him how to make many other dishes.
“Stick to your roots. Sometimes that can turn into something like this,” Thomas said. “That’s the only thing that I’m doing. I’m giving people a part of my family history. Family is important.”
Thomas has also worked for many different restaurants in Morgantown and that gave him a vision to open his own restaurant.
He started out doing pop-ups for Sweet Southern Smoke at Smokin’ Jack’s and around the area about a year-and-a-half ago.
Several years ago, Thomas saw that the building that Sweet Southern Smoke is in was unoccupied and seized the opportunity to open his restaurant. “The spot opened, and I said that we were going to try it out. I just threw all of my eggs in the basket, and we’ve been here since. … Food is big in my family’s background, and I knew we could make a mark.”
Sweet Southern Smoke, at 1616 Earl L. Core Road, is open from 11:30 a.m.-9 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, noon-9 p.m. Saturday, and noon-6 p.m. Sunday.
