Lofton B. “Bill” Johnson, 85, of Bruceton Mills (Glade Farm area), passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
He was born in Morgantown on April 24, 1936, a son of the late Lofton B. Hartman and Gladys Shrout Johnson, and stepfather, Charles Johnson.
Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Jean Ann Dalzot Johnson, whom he married June 7, 1992; two sons, James (Patty) Johnson, of Shawsville, Va., and Michael Johnson, of Morgantown; three grandchildren, Stacy Burns, Brian Johnson and a special granddaughter and her husband, who helped Bill and Jean through the years, Tiffany (Eddie) Johnson; several great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his canine companion, Smokey.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Delores Jackson, Mary Rishel, Margaret Pollock and Betty Swift.
Bill was a veteran of the United States Army having served during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church in Cheat Lake. He was the owner of Johnson Rentals, and retired from the WVU Department of Public Safety. He was also employed at the former Bethlehem Steel in Baltimore.
Bill was a kind hearted man who would go out of his way to help in anyone in need. His family loved his spaghetti and vegetable soup.
Friends may join the family to honor Bill’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover/Morgantown, from 3-6 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3. A scriptural wake service will be held in the funeral home at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday to conclude the visitation. On Monday, Oct. 4, Bill will be moved to St. Luke Catholic Church, 19 Jo Glenn Drive, Morgantown (Cheat Lake) to lay in repose from 9 a.m. until the celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. with Father Biju Devassy as celebrant. Following the mass, those in attendance at the church will be invited to a meal in Bill’s honor. To conclude the day’s events, family and friends will then gather at the Shady Grove Cemetery in Bruceton Mills, at 1 p.m. on Monday, where Bill will be laid to rest with full military honors accorded.
Guests at the funeral home are recommended to wear facial coverings. However, those in attendance at the funeral mass will be required to wear facial coverings.
