RACINE, Ohio — The Trinity Christian football team finally got back on the field after seeing its past two games postponed due to COVID protocols. Playing just their second game of the season, the Warriors travelled to Ohio to take on Southern, which came into the contest with a 3-1 record.
The Warriors wasted little time getting back into a groove, scoring their first touchdown just one minute into the game on a 5-yard TD run by junior Levi Teets.
They never looked back as they cruised to a 30-0 victory to improve to 2-0 on the season. Teets rushed 18 times for 148 yards and three TDs. His other two scores coming on runs of 12 yards and 88 yards. The final TD came on a 1-yard pass from sophomore Jaylon Hill to sophomore Carmelo Kniska to round out the Warriors first half scoring, taking a 27-0 lead into the half. Sophomore Ben Lohmann was the leading receiver with 84 yards on four receptions as Hill had a solid game passing, going 17-26 for 136 yards.
The only scoring of the second half was a 35 yard field goal by junior Kyle Knight. Knight also went 3-4 on PAT kicks, his only miss coming on a blocked kick by the Tornadoes. Additionally, he had three punts downed inside of the 10 yard line. Teets added 72 yards on four punt returns as the Warriors’ special teams shined in the contest.
But the story of the game may be the Warriors’ defense. Southern came into the game averaging 41.8 points per game on the season. The Warriors shut down the Tornadoes’ high powered offense, forcing numerous punts and three turnovers. Hill and Kniska each had a fumble recovery and freshman Chayce Adams had an interception.
“Extremely proud of our heart and persistence,” head coach Chris Simpson said. “This team continues to play as a unit and display selflessness on and off the field. We faced a physically tough Southern Racine team and executed our plan for victory. Chayce Adams stepped up in a huge way. Chayce is usually a quarterback for us, but stepped into a role on the line this week in support of one of his brothers. He also pulled in a timely interception late in the 4th quarter to help seal the victory. He is an amazing freshman with a stellar football IQ. He is a blessing to have on the team.
“Defensively, we forced three turnovers and were able to shut out a team that scored well over 120 points in its last two games. The defense continues to be a strength and I am extremely proud of each of them.”
The Warriors will host Cameron at 7 p.m. next Friday.
