Trinity wins season opener with 28-14 victory over Bridgeport (Ohio)

MORGANTOWN — Trinity Christian beat Bridgeport (Ohio) 28-14 in the Warriors’ season opener Friday night. The game was moved to Morgantown High due to concerns about the potential condition of Trinity’s field with the heavy rainfall Wednesday.

The game began with both teams going 3-and-out on their first possession. Bridgeport then put a drive together to take a 6-0 lead near the end of the first quarter. The second quarter belonged to the Warriors, as Levi Teets scored three touchdowns in the frame.

The scores came on runs of 7 yards, 33 yards and 28 yards. The defense also stiffened, taking the ball away from the Bulldogs twice before halftime on two forced fumbles with recoveries by Teets and Jaylon Hill. The Warriors took a 21-6 lead into the break.

The third quarter saw Trinity give the ball away on its first two possessions. The Bulldogs took advantage by scoring their second touchdown midway through the period to make it a 21-14 game. The Warriors offense responded on the first play of the fourth quarter when Hill found Kyle Knight for a 43-yard touchdown catch and run. Knight added his fourth PAT kick of the game to make the score 28-14. To top things off, Knight intercepted a pass with just over a minute left to put the game away.

Trinity coach Christopher Simpson was pleased to come away with victory in the hard-fought game.

“I’m proud of my team’s effort tonight,” he said “We have work to do, but I’ll take a victory. Levi Teets scored three times and made the difference for us. A late interception by Kyle Knight and an early TD by him made the difference. Bridgeport is a good team that fought hard. They should be proud. We will keep growing and pushing forward. Proud of the effort tonight by my entire team and coaching staff.”

Trinity will be back in action Sept. 10 as it travels to Millersport, Ohio, looking to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
