Retired Morgantown City Police Department Sgt. Gregory Dean “Greg” Rhodes, 53, of Cheat Lake, passed away Sunday, Aug. 29, 2021, at Mon Health Medical Center from a hard fought battle with COVID-19.
He was born Aug. 12, 1968, in Uniontown, Pa.
Greg is survived by his wife of nearly 31 years, Terri Lynn Wontroba Rhodes, and his two sons, Gregory and Charles Rhodes.
Greg entered the Washington D.C. Police Academy and served with the D.C. Metro Police Force for three years. He and Terri moved back to Morgantown so that Greg could help care for his ailing father, and from there he began his career with the Morgantown Police Department. Greg served in various capacities with the MPD beginning in 1993, and retired with the rank of sergeant after 25 years of service to his community in 2018. He spent several of those years as a K9 handler.
Spending time with his family meant everything to Greg, and he enjoyed restoring old vehicles.
Friends may join the family to honor Greg’s life and legacy at Smith Funeral & Cremation Care, 108 Holland Ave., Westover/Morgantown, from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 2, and from 2-8 p.m., Friday, Sept. 3.
Greg will be moved to Kingdom: A Community Church, 540 Fairmont Road, Westover, where he will lay in repose from 9 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m., on Saturday, Sept. 4. The service will be officiated by Pastor Kevin Cain.
Following the funeral service, Greg will be carried in his cherished Ford 250 Super Duty and laid to rest at the Zion Cemetery, Sunset Beach Road, Cheat Lake, in a procession led by his brothers and sisters in blue.
