MORGANTOWN, W. Va. — Maya McCutcheon’s career with the WVU women’s soccer team got off to a fast start Thursday.
The Oklahoma transfer recorded a goal and an assist, as the 12th-ranked Mountaineers opened their season with a 4-0 shutout against Buffalo at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
The former all-Big 12 freshman assisted on Julianne Vallerand’s goal in the 25th minute to give WVU a 1-0 lead. She added her own unassisted goal in the 52nd minute for a 3-0 lead.
Rhea Kijowski and Lauren Segalla also scored for the Mountaineers (1-0), who will host Virginia at 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Mountaineers outshot the Bulls (0-1), 11-6 and also had a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Kayza Massey and Maddie Murphy combined in goal for the shutout. They each recorded one save.
Vallerand had three shots (two on goal) in the game.
Jordan Brewster played all 90 minutes for the Mountaineers. The senior is the reigning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.
