Demetry “Mack” Walker, 23, of Morgantown, passed away from complications of chronic myeloid leukemia on June 19, 2021, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown.
He was born on June 24, 1997, in New Iberia, La., and resided in Louisiana until 2010. He graduated from University High School in 2015 and then attended West Virginia University.
After working at Roots and Harmony Medical Group, Demetry developed an interest in nursing and enrolled in the Licensed Practical Nurse program at Monongalia County Technical Education Center (MTEC). He completed all of the classroom and clinical requirements for graduation despite his illness, and his diploma will be presented to his family at the MTEC graduation ceremony on Aug. 6.
Demetry is survived and cherished by his mother, Danielle Walker, of Morgantown; his father, Nolton Jackson Jr., of Fayetteville, Ga.; siblings, Devin Walker, of Morgantown, Shallandra Jackson, Vonshay Jackson and Samuel Jackson, of Fairburn, Ga., Noltrinice Connor, of New Orleans, Noltavia Connor, of Franklin, La., Zion Jackson, of Houston, and Hunter and Katilyn Rogers, of Breaux Bridge, La; maternal grandparents Derbie Bernard, of Morgantown, and Oscar Walker Sr. and Geraldine Walker, of Lafayette, La.; paternal grandparents, Clara Bell Marks Jackson, of Four Corners, La.; maternal great-grandmothers, Lucille Bernard and Mildred Leonard, of New Iberia, La.; partner, Nicholas Johnson, of Columbus, Ohio; and many beloved aunts and uncles in Louisiana.
A memorial service was held by the family at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in New Iberia, La., on July 10.
Morgantown friends are invited to celebrate his life and legacy by joining his nursing student classmates at the MTEC graduation in the University High School Auditorium, 131 Bakers Ridge Road, Morgantown, at 4 p.m., Aug. 6.
