Margaret E. (Lizzie) Brautigam passed away peacefully July 5, 2021, surrounded by her family. Peg was born May 1, 1928, in Mercer, Pa., to Wendell L. and Mary C. (Heinzel) Lizzie.
She graduated from Mercer High School in 1946. Peg was married to Walter E. “Bud” Brautigam on March 22, 1952, in Ingram, Pa. Together they celebrated 65 anniversaries until Bud’s passing on Oct. 25, 2017. They raised two sons, Russell Brautigam, of Mercer, Pa., and Jack (Carol) Brautigam, of Morgantown. Peg was a loving grandmother to Jamie (Jay) Castner, of Atlanta, and John Brautigam, of Gibsonia, Pa.
Throughout her life, Mom had many jobs. While still in high school, she worked as a housekeeper and babysitter. She was employed as a grocery store cashier (Mercer A. & P. and Sines Value King), dental assistant (Dr. Harry Miller) and bookkeeper in family-owned businesses (Brautigam Texaco, Auto Service and Model Raceway). Mom enjoyed working at the Anna May Shop in Mercer prior to semi-retiring to flea marketing with Dad.
Mom had numerous talents. She could cook, bake, can, sew, clean, refinish furniture and garden (vegetables or flowers) with the best. She had a beautiful voice, loved to sing and seemed to know every word of every hymn, Christmas song and popular song of her time. Mom loved animals, and the family pets were appreciative of her kind and gentle ways. Together with Dad, Mom enjoyed bowling, square dancing, walking and organ lessons (Dad learned to play “Peg o’ My Heart”). Mom attended Trinity Presbyterian Church in Mercer, Pa., and was a member of the Mercer Chapter No. 180 Order of the Eastern Star.
Peg was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Marie Grasinger, Theresa Boyd and Anna Lizzie; four brothers, Wendell “Bud,” Joseph, Lawrence and Robert Lizzie; and her sister-in-law, Alice May Boyd. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Robert Brautigam, of Mercer, Pa., and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mom was hard working, smart, humble and thankful for everything, regardless of how big or small. She always had something kind to say to everyone. All who knew her loved her. She was especially appreciative of the staff at Greystone Country Estates, the attending staff from Kindred Hospice, of New Castle, Pa., Dr. David Hoyt and Pastor Richard Carlson. We will miss her deeply. We celebrate that Mom and Dad are together again for eternity and await the time we are reunited.

A visitation will be held in the funeral home chapel, from 10 a.m., Saturday, July 17, until 11 a.m., the time of the memorial service, with the Rev. Richard Carlson officiating.
