Michael Evanto, 91, of Morgantown, passed away on Monday, July 5, 2021, at the Madison Center.
He was born on Nov. 14, 1929, in Morgantown, a son of the late John Evanto Sr., and Sofia (Sevoula) Evanto.
Mike was a 1947 graduate of University High School and entered the navy in 1951, serving on the USS Randolph. After his military service, he went on to work at Humphrey #7 Mine. He then worked at MSHA as an electrical inspector. He finished his career as an education and training supervisor, traveling extensively throughout the Midwest. After his retirement, he was often called upon to teach mine safety classes.
Mike was an avid golfer and bowler and loved to hunt and fish.
He is survived by four children, Mike Evanto, Susan Morton (Dennis), Cheryl Clark (Derek) and Chris Evanto (Julie); grandchildren: Morgan Morgan, Atticus Morton, Jett Morton, Kristy Lantzy, Ryan Matala, Kayli Kosten, Jesse Evanto and Lexy Evanto; great-grandchildren: Penelope Morgan, Phinney Morton, Emerson Morton, Alana Neal, Haven Neal, Emma Matala and Katie Matala.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his loving wife, Martha Lee Phillips; daughter-in-law, Kathy Evanto; and siblings: George, John, Andy, Mary, Charlie, Helen and Jimmy, with Mike being the last of the original Evanto family.
The family would like to express its heartfelt thanks to Evergreen and WV Caring for three plus years of care and to the Madison Center for providing him comfort in his final few weeks.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., from 10 a.m.-1 p.m., Friday July 9. A graveside service will be held at WV National Cemetery in Pruntytown later that day at 2:30 p.m. with full military rites.
