BRIDGEPORT — Morgantown’s season came to an end in walk-off fashion Wednesday, as Bridgeport pulled ahead in the eighth inning, 4-3.
After a scoreless first inning, a hit by pitch and walk gave Morgantown its first two runs of the game in the second. A single to third base from Ethan Smith in the top of the third sent Quincy Thornton home for the third MHS run of the game, and the Mohigans pushed the bill by holding BHS to another scoreless half in the bottom of the frame.
The Indians finally got on the board in the fourth, putting up one run. From there, they added a single run in the fifth and sixth to tie the game, and held MHS scoreless in the final inning of regulation. Morgantown responded with a quick three outs to force extra innings.
MHS then suffered the same three-up-and-out treatment, and three walks with a one-out count upped the pressure on the Mohigans to keep their postseason hopes alive. After a line out secured the second out of the inning, it looked as if MHS could force nine innings, but a single to left field by Cam Cole drove in Phill Reed to seal the game.
Caleb Cottle took the loss for Morgantown, pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing two runs on one hit. He struck out one and walked five. Ryan Fluharty relieved Cottle and pitched the remaining 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out two and walking four.
Austin Mann was credited with the win for BHS, pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits while striking out five and walking one.
Smith led MHS at the plate with a 1 for 3 performance, logging the Mohigans’ only RBI.
Anthony Dixon led BHS at the plate, going 1 for 3 and logging one RBI.
