MORGANTOWN — Deuce McBride’s next basketball stop will take him to the NBA Combine in Chicago on June 21.
According to a source within the WVU men’s basketball program, McBride earned an invite to the combine and plans to participate in front of NBA general managers and scouts.
McBride also shared his official invitation on his Instagram page.
The combine is by invitation only for players and is scheduled for June 21-27. Generally, the NBA invites the top 60, or so, prospects to participate.
At the combine, players are measured and weighed and put through a series of individual drills and scrimmage games. Players are also permitted to talk with teams.
This past season, McBride averaged 15.9 points per game and shot 41.4% (46 of 111) from 3-point range. He is also one of the Mountaineers’ top defenders and he also dished out 140 assists over 29 games last season.
McBride put his name in the 2021 draft in April, but has kept his options open to returning to WVU for next season.
In May, WVU head coach Bob Huggins indicated to The Dominion Post that McBride was leaning toward coming back to school.
According to most mock drafts, McBride is projected as an early second-round pick.
While second-round selections have found their way onto NBA rosters, only first-round picks are guaranteed a two-year contract.
McBride will have until July 19 — 10 days before the draft — to announce his decision.
McBride and junior guard Sean McNeil are the only remaining WVU players still considering going pro.
Senior guard Taz Sherman also entered his name into the draft, but announced his decision to return, while forward Derek Culver officially signed with an agent and will keep his name in the draft.
WVU signed Old Dominion transfer Malik Curry, a senior point guard, in April for some added depth at the point guard position.
In other hoops news, the program announced Monday that freshman guards Kobe Johnson and Seth Wilson — both out of Ohio — have enrolled and will be able to participate in team workouts this summer.
