Sports@DominionPost.com

Kadence Pettit threw a seven-inning no hitter against Morgantown in the Region I, Section 1 title game, and the Monarchs put up six runs in three innings to claim the crown, 6-0.

The Monarchs got on the board in the top of the third with a sac fly from Pettit, before a single from Doriann Kins drove in the second and final of the frame. JM followed up in the fourth with three runs, first finding two on error and the final on a ground out to first.

The sectional champs’ final run came one inning later, a sac fly from Joey Mongino to put in Alyssa McLaughlin.

Pettit’s 92-pitch no hitter included 10 strikeouts.

Three Mohigans shared the circle, with Mikala Rogers leading off, pitching 3 1/3 innings and allowing six runs on four hits.

The loss ends Morgantown’s season, while the Monarchs now advance to the Region I title game.

University 12, Buckhannon-Upshur 9

Buckhannon-Upshur had University on the ropes in Friday’s sectional game, but the Hawks managed to pull ahead in the fourth inning and hold off the advancing Buccaneers in the sixth to remain alive, 12-9.

B-U posted a big first inning, turning in three runs but UHS stopped the scoring on the sixth and seventh at bats with two straight outs. Noah Braham responded in the bottom of the first frame with a single to put in Avante Neal, though, to cut down on the Buccaneers’ lead. UHS then posted three runs in the second inning to take the lead at 4-3, but B-U opened the third with four runs. UHS replied with another three-run half inning, tying the game.

The Hawks retook the lead on inning later with two runs as Neal scored on error and Braham crossed the plate on an Aaron Forbes ground out at first.

After a silent fifth for both clubs, B-U tied the game once more with two runs in the sixth, but UHS capitalized in the bottom of the frame on three singles to jump ahead 12-9. A hit and walk were the only things afforded to B-U in the seventh, as UHS cleaned house quickly to move on.
Chase Edwards led at the plate for UHS, going 3 for 4 at logging four RBI. Drew Herter helped with a 3 for 4 performance of his own, driving in two runs.

Zach Harmon was credited with the win, pitching 4 innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. He struck out four and walked three.

Elijah Arbogast took the loss for B-U, pitching 1 inning and giving up three runs on four hits.
University next faces Bridgeport for the second time in the sectional tournament Saturday at 4 p.m.

MHS sees 2 losses at states, 1 move to a title game

After moving to the semifinals round with a solid win Thursday, Morgantown’s No. 3 Kassie Regules fell to Huntington’s Tess Weiler Friday, 8-1.

Regules and Samantha Carver fell in their doubles match against the sister team of Brooke and Blaire Vaughn, as well, in the No. 2 bracket.

Yet, Carver continues to be a bright spot for the Mohigans. The No. 4 singles player defeated George Washington’s Jana Zatar to move on to the bracket’s title game, and will face Huntington’s Sophie Agrawal Saturday.

“Once again our losses were to Region IV, which has three teams vying for the state title,” MHS coach Ted Greenlee said. “I honestly believe that we would have been in that mix with Emme [McKnight], but I can’t tell you how proud I am of this resilient group of girls who came together with only five matches left in the regular season, won the Region and had a solid showing at states. And, all but No. 1 Cat Wassick return next year to make another run at states.”
