Jeffrey Gilchrist

Jeffrey Alan “Popeye” Gilchrist, 58, passed away at his home on Monday, May 24, 2021. Jeff was born in Parkersburg, a son to Donald and Edith Gordon Gilchrist. He graduated from Parkersburg South High School in 1980 and moved to the Morgantown area in 1987.

Jeff was most recently employed by the Town of Granville as the deputy municipal court clerk. Jeff has been with the Town of Granville since 1993. His time working in Granville started with multitasking between the Public Works Department and police department.

Jeff had 30 years of experience in security and law enforcement. He served as chief of security for Chestnut Ridge Hospital for 12 years and worked as a Monongalia County sheriff’s reserve officer for five years.

While still in Parkersburg, Jeff worked for the local radio stations to pursue his love of music and that love of music followed him throughout his life. He founded and operated a music business named Rockola and helped to celebrate weddings, birthdays, anniversaries and gatherings of all types. His record collection was as diverse as he was.

Jeff was an avid “Star Trek” fan, whose collection was vast and vintage dating back to the ‘70s. One of his most memorable moments was meeting William Shatner in person. He had a love of the sea, boats and might have made a good pirate. He never took himself too seriously, had the greatest sense of humor, and loved a good cigar. His charm, wit and sarcasm will be missed by those who knew him best.

Jeff leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 22 years, Michelle Snodgrass Gilchrist and their daughter, Lindsay; two brothers, Steve Gilchrist and wife Tara, of Mount Morris, Pa., and Rick Gilchrist and wife Regina Durista, of Morgantown; one sister, Karen Devers, and husband Todd, of Belpre, Ohio. Also, surviving is his uncle, John, and aunt, Pam Maslany, of Mount Morris, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Edith Gilchrist.

The family will receive friends at the Fred Jenkins Funeral Home, from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 28. Cremation will follow and a private inurnment service will be held by the family.
