MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Morgantown tennis teams swept John Marshall Wednesday behind strong performances all around.
For the boys, No. 1 Ataes Aggarwal, No. 2 Max Phillip-Hartley and No. 3 Adien Aggarwal all defeated their opponents, 8-0, in singles action, while No. 4 Dake LaSala defeated Michael Hall, 9-7, to give the Mohigans a 4-0 lead over the Monarchs.
The Mohigans (15-2) finalized the win with shutouts in doubles action.
On the girls’ courts, JM got the upper-hand in two doubles matches, but MHS won out the rest to pick up win a quality win without No. 1 Cat Wassick, 5-2.
The Mohigans (14-2) swept singles, with No. 2 Kassie Regules picking up the lone shutout.
The Monarchs picked up their wins in No. 1 and 3 doubles, as Miranda Taylor and Lauren Tekely defeated Amy Lu and Lauren Gilchrist, 8-1, and Riley McIntre and Tessa Tordella defeating Amber Li and Sophia Mascari, 8-5.
Next up, MHS travels to Buckhannon-Upshur to face the Buccaneers Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
Baseball
Morgantown 13, North Marion 3
Morgantown picked up an early lead before exploding in the fifth to 10-run North Marion Wednesday night, 13-3.
After putting three runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning, Morgantown saw three silent innings — while giving up one run to the Huskies in the fourth — before North Marion tied it up in the top of the fifth.
In response, the Mohigans’ bats began eating in the bottom of the frame, sending in seven runners.
After keeping North Marion off the board int he sixth, MHS added three runs in the bottom of the frame to enact the mercy rule.
Ethan Smith (2 for 2), Ryan Fluharty (2 for 3) and Caleb Nutter (1 for 3) led Morgantown at the plate, all securing three RBI.
In total, MHS had 13 runs on nine hits.
Jace Rinehart brought in North Marion’s only two RBI on a 2 for 3 night at the plate. The Huskies had three runs on eight hits.
Three pitchers saw the mound for MHS, with Jeffrey Poach starting things off, allowing one hit through two innings. Aiden Frombach stepped in for 2 2/3 innings, allowing five hits, three urns and one walk, while striking out four. Caleb Cottle closed, allowing just two hits.
Nikholas Tobin pitched three innings for North Marion, allowing four hits, three runs and three walks. He struck out three. Brock Troy and Joseph Hess each pitched 1 1/3 innings to try and reel things in, but gave up a combined 10 runs.
Softball
Clay-Battelle 2, Magnolia 1
Cam Watson secured a walk-off for Clay-Battelle in a tight battle with Magnolia, driving the ball to right field.
Sidney Wilson led the Cee-Bees in the circle, pitching her seventh game in eight days.
The win makes it six straight for C-B, giving the team a 9-5 record heading into another match today at Paden City at 5p.m.
Lacrosse
Fairmont Senior 12, Preston 3
Fairmont Senior got the better of Preston in Wednesday evening’s meeting, defeating the Knights, 12-3.
The Polar Bears took a fast 8-1 lead at the half before putting up four more points over the final two quarters and holding the Knights (1-10) to just two.
Riley Land, Daniel Long and Curtis Shreve secured the goals for PHS, while Shreve and Levi Lowdermilk logged assists.
Goalkeeper Zeke Lilly has 12 saves in the loss.
The Knights return to action on Saturday at 2 p.m. against George Washington.
