James Hamrick

James Herbert Hamrick Sr., 80, formerly of Preston County, passed away on Friday, March 19, 2021, at his home in Wilmington, Del. with his family by his side.

Mr. Hamrick graduated from Kingwood High School and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a Boatswain Mate Petty Officer Third Class from 1959-1963 onboard the USS William R. Rush DD714.

After his military service, he spent most of his early career working as a meat packer for Sterling Packing Company in Masontown, and then as maintenance and groundskeeper for artist Jamie Wyeth, of Chadds Ford, Pa., and other DuPont owned Estates.

He then made his home in Delaware, where his later career was spent working for 20 plus years as a maintenance supervisor at Rose Hill Community Center until his passing.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved to work in his garden, travel, play shuffleboard, listen to classic country music and watch Western movies. He also loved Dallas Cowboys football, hunting and spending time with his family. He was a member of the VFW Post 615 and American Legion Joseph B. Stahl Memorial Post 30, of New Castle, Del.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Rose; two daughters, Marla Ballard and spouse Tim, of Fort Payne, Ala., and Diane Boone and spouse Christopher, of New Holland, Pa.; two sons, James H. Hamrick Jr. and spouse Pamela, of Bear Del., and David Hamrick and spouse Michelle, of Northeast Md.; four sisters, Dolly Everly and spouse Charles, of Terra Alta, Betty Broadwater, of Louisa, Va., Linda Kope, of Terra Alta, and Rosalee Reeves, of Rawlings, Md.; two brothers, John Hamrick and spouse Vickie, of Morgantown, and Al Hamrick and spouse Carol, of Akron, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Julia, James III and Daniel Hamrick, Austin Tidwell, Carissa, Natalee and Finley Hamrick and C.J. Boone; great-granddaughter, Alaia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Laura Jane Hamrick; and his sister, Gladys Sigley (March 19, 2010).

The family would like to send a special thank you to everyone at UPenn Oncology, Christiana Care Hospital, the VA medical center and countless doctors and medical staff for their special care.

Cremation was arranged by Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, of Newport, Del.

The family will receive friends at the Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home, from 9 a.m., Saturday, May 1, until the time of memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pastor Michael Saturday officiating. Memorial services will also be live-streamed for those who cannot attend in person. Mr. Hamrick’s ashes will be laid to rest at the East Oak Grove Cemetery with military honors conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard, Mid-Atlantic Region and Westover and Morgantown VFWs.
