Maryland defensive back Tyrin Woodby commits to WVU

By Keenan Cummings

MORGANTOWN — West Virginia continues to build momentum in the 2022 recruiting class and added a talented prospect in Baltimore (Md.) St. Frances 2022 cornerback Tyrin Woodby.

Woodby, at 6-foot-1 and 165 pounds, selected the Mountaineers over offers from Maryland, Pittsburgh, Mississippi, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Liberty and others.

WVU first extended a scholarship offer in February and things only continued to build from there. Co-defensive coordinator ShaDon Brown took over the lead in his pursuit and the pair established a strong bond that eventually led to him pulling the trigger for the Mountaineers.

The coaching staff made it clear that Woodby was a priority for it in the class and are targeting him at the cornerback position, where his coverage abilities make him a natural fit for the scheme.

“My favorite stat about West Virginia was that they had the number one pass defense in the nation last season,” Woodby said.

Woodby took a virtual visit to Morgantown and was able to get a complete picture of what the program had to offer, including meeting with the coaches, as well as seeing the stadium and facilities. That, along with his connection with the coaches, was enough to help him elect to end things.

The commitment of Woodby not only fills a need for WVU in the backend of the defense, it gets the program into a powerhouse football program in St. Frances. Maryland has been a lifeblood pipeline to WVU over the years ,and adding Woodby should only help matters there.

Overall, Woodby becomes the fifth commitment for the Mountaineers in the 2022 recruiting class, and is the first at the defensive back position in this cycle. He also represents the first 2022 pledge for Brown as the lead recruiter since he took the job with West Virginia.

The Mountaineers are expected to take close to a full class in this cycle, and Woodby is a quality addition to a class that has been picking up a lot of steam.
