BECKLEY, W.Va. – No. 1 Morgantown cruised to an easy 77-55 win over CTC Invitational host Woodrow Wilson Saturday, claiming the tournament.
The Mohigans (11-1) started out the tournament with a 30-point victory over Shady Spring on Friday, defeating the Tigers, 77-47.
“We played great team defense this weekend,” MHS coach Dave Tallman said. “We also shared the basketball very well on offense. I’m proud of our players and assistant coaches.”
In the championship game, Morgantown jumped out to a 19-13 lead in the first quarter and matched that with another 19-point quarter while holding Beckley to just seven points to lead 38-20 at the half. The Mohigans tacked on 24 points in the third and 15 in the fourth quarters while holding the Eagles to 35 to maintain their lead.
Brooks Gage and Luke Bechtel matched each other with 18 points to lead the Mohigans, while Carson Poffenberger tacked on 16. Ben Gilliam (15) and Jace Colucci (13) paced the Eagles with a combined 28 points.
Next up, Morgantown hosts Wheeling Park on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Trinity 46, Moorefield 28
Trinity routed Moorefield 46-28 off the back of a solid second half defensive performance, picking up its fifth win of the season.
The Warriors (5-3) and Yellowjackets started out matching each other, ending the first quarter locked at 9-9. TCS was able to take a small lead heading into halftime, and held the small margin in the third stanza. The fourth quarter, though, saw Trinity pad the lead, going on a 19-1 run to close out the win.
“Today we played with much more patience on the offensive end of the ball, and took advantage of the matchups placed in front of us,” TCS coach Rick Hill said. “We moved the ball around the best we have all season and found the open player. Defense is key for us to be successful and the kids stepped up the intensity in the second half. I was very proud of the way they came out and executed.”
Trinity returns to action against Oak Glen on Monday. Action kicks off at 6:30 p.m.
Girls’ basketball
No. 4 Morgantown 53, No. 6 Woodrow Wilson 50 OT
BECKLEY, W.Va. – The fourth-ranked Mohigans held off the upset against No. 6 Woodrow Wilson Saturday, defeating the Eagles, 53-50, in overtime.
Kaitlyn Ammons led the Mohigans (8-2) with 19 points, while freshman Sofia Wassick added 11. Cat Wassick grabbed 11 rebounds in the win.
“Our kids showed a lot of resilience battling back from down four [points] with under a minute to play to steal a win on the road,” MHS coach Jason White said. “Sofia Wassick got a steal and hit a streaking Lindsay Bechtel to tie it at 49 with 10 seconds left in regulation.”
University 69, Lewis County 41
Lauren Dean and Ella Simpson led a group of four Hawks in double digits at University swamped Lewis County, 69-41, Saturday.
University jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the first before going on a 20-9 run in the second half to take a 39-21 lead at the half. Another big quarter, a 17-6 third, helped UHS (8-7) pad its lead more en route to the win.
Dean and Simpson each had 13 points, while Emily Sharkey added 12 and Eden Gibson netted 11.
UHS returns to the pine on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., facing Hampshire.
Trinity 57, Moorefield 27
MOOREFIELD, W.Va. – Trinity Christian dominated Moorefield 57-27 in their first road game of the season Saturday to tack on win No. 6.
Trinity picked up a big 20-2 lead after the first stanza, and managed to hold Moorefield below 10 points each quarter for the rout.
Jaclyn Smith and Jenna Barnett led the Warriors (6-3) with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Barnett added two steals, two assists and six rebounds.
“We haven’t played well on the road all season until today,” TCS coach Mike Baldy said. “We challenged our girls to change the way they travel in order to be extremely focused come game time. I’m especially proud of how well we played defensively for four quarters.”
Trinity returns to action Monday at 7 p.m. when they visit Preston.
Middle school basketball
Mountaineer Middle 8s 38, Trinity 10: Lexi Simpson led Mountaineer Middle with 12 points in the win over Trinity.
Mountaineer Middle 7s 53, Trinity 15: Riley Braham and Reese Bealko led Mountaineer in the rout of Trinity, netting 14 and 10 points, respectively.
