PREP ROUNDUP: No. 4 Morgantown upsets No. 2 Wheeling Park 55-41

WHEELING, W.Va. – Morgantown avenged an earlier loss to Wheeling Park Tuesday, defeating the second-ranked Patriots (10-2) on their home court, 55-41.

After going toe-to-toe with the Patriots, the Mohigans (7-1) broke open the game with a 14-0 run at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth quarters to secure the win.

Senior Kaitlyn Ammons led three Mohigans in double digits with 17 points, while Lindsay Bechtel and Revaya Sweeney combined for 22 points with 12 and 10, respectively.

Lindsey Garrison paced the Patriots with 21 points.

“Really proud of our kids who faced some adversity early against a very pesky Wheeling Park team,” MHS coach Jason White said. “After trying several defenses we finally got into a defensive rhythm late and our movement picked up late in the third quarter.”

MHS returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Beckley County Armory as part of the New River Invitational. On Friday the Mohigans face No. 3 Cabell Midland at 2:45 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m. they face Woodrow Wilson.

University 48, Bridgeport 37

Lauren Dean and Ella Simpson combined for 30 points to lead No. 9 University in an upset of No. 8 Bridgeport, 48-37.

Bridgeport secured the first quarter lead at 15-19, but a big second quarter for UHS helped the Hawks (7-6) erase the deficit and hold 10-point lead going into the break. UHS was able to hold off the Indians in the second half with a strong defensive front, albeit nearly matching points.

The Hawks return to action Wednesday with a 7 p.m. road game at 3A’s No. 1 Fairmont Senior (11-0).

Clay Battelle 54, Notre Dame 26

Liv Ammons and Ronda Petrucci combined for 26 points to lead Clay-Battelle (8-5) over Notre Dame Tuesday night, 54-26.

The Cee-Bees started out doubling the Irish’s points in the first stanza, going into the short break with a 16-8 lead. A big second quarter, however, saw C-B mount a much larger lead heading into the half, outscoring NDHS 18-4 to lead 34-12. Clay-Battelle outpaced the Irish the rest of the way to secure its eighth win.

Ammons secured a game-high 16 points, while Petrucci added 10 to round out the double-digit scorers for C-B.

Abigail Lanham paced the Irish with 14 points and Zyla Lanham added 10.

“Tonight we were able to utilize a variety of post players to gather in half of our points,” C-B coach David Joyce said. “We need those same post players to finish strong as we wrap up the season with four home games.”

Clay-Battelle returns to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. hosting Hundred.

Boys’ basketball

Morgantown 78, John Marshall 37

Led by young guard Sha-Ron Young, Morgantown tacked on win No. 10 Tuesday with a 78-37 rout of John Marshall.

Morgantown jumped out to an early 13-3 lead in the first quarter, led by a 22-9 run in the second to close out the half 35-12. Following the break, MHS (10-1) hung 42 on the Monarchs while the stifling defense held JM to just 25.

“We didn’t shoot the ball particularly well tonight, but we did a nice job on the defensive end,” MHS coach Dave Tallman said.  “Sha-Ron had a nice game for us.  It seems like we have a different guy each night who gets hot and leads the way. Now we get a couple days off from playing, finally, and will refocus and get ready for two big games this weekend in Beckley.”

Young led MHSS with 19 points, while Alec Poland (12) and Brooks Gage (10) combined for 22.

Derrick Derrow paced JM with 15 points.

University 58, Buckhannon-Upshur 55

University overcame an 11 point third-quarter deficit to beat Buckhannon-Upshur, 58-55, Tuesday night on Bakers Ridge.

UHS was led in scoring by Blake Barkley with 20 points, Ryan Niceler with 16 and Morgantown transplant Garrison Kisner with 11. The Hawks (8-1) were perfect from the line making all seven of its attempts.

University next travels to Bridgeport Thursday night for a matchup against the Indians.

Middle school basketball

Suncrest 7s 31, Mountaineer Middle 49: Kelton Blunt led Suncrest (4-5) with 9 points and Sunny Guppi added 8. Mason Kemper led Mountaineer with 17 and Jaden Matthews added 9.

Suncrest 8s 44, Mountaineer Middle 41: Marty Johnson led Suncrest (9-0) with 15 points, while Brady Savage contributed 12. Mountaineer Middle was led by Isaiah Griffis with 14.
