WVU safety Tykee Smith to enter transfer portal

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Tykee Smith, widely considered one of the best defenders for WVU, announced Wednesday he will enter the NCAA transfer portal.

A major blow to the Mountaineers’ defense, Smith played a critical role the last two years, finishing with 14 tackles, 10 1/2 tackles for loss, one sack, four interceptions, 13 pass breakups and one forced fumble in just 17 games at spear safety.

Last season, Smith helped WVU finished as the top-ranked pass defense nationally and was named a honorable mention All-Big 12, though he did land on several All-American teams.

Smith follows cornerback Dreshun Miller as starters to enter the portal since the end of last season. Miller ended up transferring to Auburn.

Smith did not play in the Liberty Bowl win against Army, and WVU head coach Neal Brown said after the game Smith was involved in an accident and did not practice much prior.

Instead, Arizona grad transfer Scottie Young got the start and he will likely be the favorite to replace Smith next season.
