Hrysanthi “Christine” Demanelis, 85, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2021, at Evergreen Assisted Living.
She was born in Sopiki, Albania, on Dec. 1, 1935, daughter of the late Hlias and Penelope Lavaris.
In 1954, she immigrated to America where she became a lifelong member of The Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and 30-plus years as a volunteer at the American Red Cross in Morgantown.
On Aug. 20, 1955, she was married to Konstantinos “Gus” Demanelis and soon after was a proud homemaker and mother of two sons, Ernie and Tony Demanelis. Friends and family who knew Christine describe her as a gracious hostess, an active member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary Board of her church, a loving wife and excellent cook and baker (particularly her specialty, Greek pastries and desserts). She enjoyed traveling, going to the beach, ceramics, painting and other forms of arts. She will be greatly missed by her community, friends and, most of all, by her family. May her memory be eternal.
Christine is survived by her son, Tony Demanelis; daughter-in-law, Anna Demanelis, granddaughter, Carolyn Stackhouse and husband Zachary and great-grandson, Tiernan Stackhouse; granddaughter, Kathryn Montjoy and husband, Doug; sister-in-law, Areti Demanelis; nieces, Elene Georgeopoulos and husband, Jimmy, and Marianthi Kati; nephew, George Demanelis; and one godson, Van Fetanis, and his daughter, Celina. She is also survived by numerous great-nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents, Christine was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Konstantinos “Gus” Demanelis; eldest son, Ernie Demanelis; brother, Dimitris; and sister, Androniki.
The family wishes to thank staff, nurses and aids at Evergreen Assisted Living on Collins Ferry Road, as well as, Lori and Emily at Morgantown Hospice for all their help caring for her in her last few days and years.
Friends and family will be received at Hastings Funeral Home, 153 Spruce St., Morgantown from 5-8 p.m. Friday, March 26. A Trisagion service will be held at 7:30 p.m. with Father David Shaw to conclude the night’s visitation. The funeral service will be held at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 447 Spruce St. Morgantown, WV, 26505, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Interment will follow in Lawnwood Cemetery, Morgantown.
