Shirley Virginia Overfield, 82, passed away at home with her family by her side.
Shirley is survived by five children, including Kimberly Autrey (Randy) and Gregory Overfield, of Pfafftown, N.C.; stepchildren, Jay Merrill (Janet) and Eric Merrill, of Morgantown; and special daughters-in-law, Kathleen Kirchmar, of Morgantown, and Chandra Overfield, of Clemmons, N.C. Shirley is also survived by 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
In her finals days, Shirley was blessed to be surrounded by family and friends loving on her and caring for her. Shirley also leaves behind many dear friends who were her extended family.
Shirley was born in Morgantown, in 1938, to Helen Gamble Teets and attended University High School, and as an adult, later graduated from Cornerstone Christian High School. Shirley started her career working at the Baltimore Venetian Blind Co. as an inspector, but that career was short-lived when she began her real life’s work as a wife, mother and grandmother. She was also a member of Sabraton Baptist Church.
Those closest to Shirley knew her to be tough and determined, thoughtful, giving, loving, dependable and fiercely loyal. Shirley was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She often sacrificed her own needs for the needs of others. Shirley loved taking care of and helping others and regularly expressed her love by cooking and baking for those she loved. There was nothing as wonderful as getting a loaf of her homemade bread and her delicious apple pie.
Shirley also enjoyed gardening and took great joy in her many flower beds. She especially loved her pink roses. Shirley liked to travel and to have fun and was always looking for something to do and somewhere to go. She enjoyed country music shows, dancing with John, spending time at Big Bear Campland and weekend trips to the Amish market. She was always eager for new challenges and to learn new things. No task ever seemed too big.
Shirley was blessed to experience love two times in her life. First, for 37 years with her husband, James Overfield, who preceded her in death in 1994, and then 22 years with John Merrill who preceded her in death in November 2020. Shirley was also preceded in death by her mother, Helen Gamble Teets, and her brother, Charles “Bill” Keller.
