Hazel Ossman

Hazel Anita Moser Ossman, 93, of Morgantown, passed away on Saturday, Jan., 23, 2021. Hazel was born in Dunkirk, N.Y., to the late Harold and Jennie Moser on Sept. 17, 1927. She grew up on a farm and attended a country school before she graduated from Dunkirk High School in 1945. Hazel went on to be a telephone operator, a job she loved, at Chautauqua and Erie Telephone Co. in Westfield, N.Y. She retired in 1987 after many years of service. After retirement, Hazel moved from New York to West Virginia to be closer to her family.

Hazel enjoyed spending time with her family, and she had many hobbies. She was a great cook, gardener, knitter and crocheter. She was a self-proclaimed “sky person,” a fan of Elvis and old-time country music and a Goodwill fanatic. She loved earrings, bingo, puzzles, cats, peanut butter, big glasses of ice-cold water and “hot and fresh” Burger King Whoppers. She also enjoyed a good hymn at the Rock Forge Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.

Hazel is survived by her daughter, Debbie Patton and son-in-law Dale, of Morgantown; granddaughters, Samantha Slone and husband Andrew, of Martinsburg, Lindsey Stockdale and husband Timothy, of Provo, Utah, and Katherine Patton and husband Alex, of Morgantown; and three great-grandchildren, Mae and Luke Stockdale, of Provo, Utah and Lucy Garber Patton, of Morgantown. She is also survived by her brother, Ronald “Bud” Moser and wife, Rosemary, of Butler, Pa.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Norman F. Ossman, in 2011; her son, Robert M. Ossman, in 2006; and her siblings, Harold Moser, Bernice Klocek, Mildred Westphal and Doris Henderson.

Thank you to the compassionate, wonderful, awesome, fantastic staff at Sundale Nursing Home, who treated Hazel like she was their mother. The family would also like to thank Morgantown Hospice for their loving care of Hazel.

Hastings Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements. Burial will take place alongside her husband at Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Hazel’s memory to Rock Forge Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1027, Dellslow, WV 26531.
