The Community Coalition for Social Justice will explore the theme of “West Virginia Civil Rights Leaders” during its 15th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at 2 p.m. Jan. 18.
Main Street Morgantown co-sponsors this family-friendly event, while the City of Morgantown provides financial support.
The coalition will work with the West Virginia University Osher Lifelong Learning Institute to provide this program via OLLI’s Zoom and Facebook Live platforms.

The program will include information about some of West Virginia’s civil rights leaders and feature a performance by Ilene Evans portraying Memphis Tennessee Garrison, who taught in McDowell County and was a leader in the NAACP.
Demarcus Bandy, an eighth grader at Mountaineer Middle School, will represent the Morgantown/Kingwood Branch of the NAACP with a presentation on “Structural and Systemic Racism and How to Build an Equitable Future.”
Janis-Rozena Peri, WVU associate professor emerita of voice, will sing.
