Frederick Turnley

Frederick “Fred” “Pappaw” William Turnley, 93, went home to heaven for Christmas on Dec. 25, 2020 and was reunited with his loving wife Jean. Fred was born on Aug. 12, 1927, in Newburg, the son of the late Richard H. and Carra D. Turnley, one of the first 50 homestead families in Arthurdale. The last surviving member of his immediate family Fred was predeceased by his brothers, Howard (Lucille), Pete (Doris) and Joe.

Fred attended the Arthurdale School and received his high school diploma while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany in 1945. He was employed in the coal industry, operating a variety of heavy equipment, supervising mining and maintaining an arsenal of heavy equipment parts and accessories.

Fred is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (John) Finch, of Grafton, and son, Fred (Carolyn) Turnley, of Kingwood; grandchildren, Chelsea (Stephen) Shine and Crystal (Evan) Bays, of Morgantown; step-grandson, Jeremy (Melissa) Layton, of Tunnelton; great-grandchildren, Atticus Finch and Adeline Grace Bays, Elaina Faith and Anthony Frederick Shine; step-grandchildren, Miranda and Quintin Layton; sisters-in-law, Polly (Joe) Elliot, Linda (Howard) Rohr, Johnetta Sypolt and Ruth Turnley; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Stonerise, Kingwood (formerly Pine Ridge Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation) for their loving care of Fred.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and guidelines, Fred was privately laid to rest by his children, next to his wife at Arthurdale Cemetery.
