Charles Fortney

Charles E. “Chuck” Fortney Jr. passed away Thursday, Oct. 22, 2020, at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital with his loving family present.

He was born Sept. 16, 1973, and was a lifelong resident of Morgantown. He was an avid basketball fan who always rooted for the North Carolina Tar Heels and would cheer on the Mountaineers to appease his mother and sister. Chuck was a school teacher and coach in Monongalia County, where he touched the lives of numerous students and players. He was also employed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals, where he made many friends.

He is survived by his mother, Sheridan Fortney (Mike Weaver), and sister, Dia Fortney. He had many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and countless friends who were like family to him.

Chuck was preceded in death by his loving father, Charles “Buzzy” Fortney, who he greatly missed and with whom he is now reunited. Chuck was also preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Family and friends will be received at Fred L. Jenkins Funeral Home from 3-7 p.m. Monday and again from 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27 until the 11 a.m. celebration of life. Chuck will be laid to rest beside his father at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

Chuck was passionate about making sure the needs of his students were met. In lieu of flowers, please consider bringing a backpack with school supplies, essentials, and/or non-perishable snacks for local elementary students.
