MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Morgantown High boys’ soccer team was in a thriller Tuesday night at Pony Lewis Field, using a penalty kick by Massino Darmelio in overtime to knock off Wheeling Park in the Region I, Section 2 semifinal.
“Effort was 10 out of 10, composure of 10 out of 10, but Wheeling Park had a plan to stymie our offense and they did everything perfect,” MHS coach Sam Snyder said. “They frustrated us and we weren’t fully able to change. We were talking about what we needed to do, but talking and doing are two different things. They had a really smart game plan and made us work really hard to break because they sat tight and smart in space.”
Snyder said each team had about two chances in regulation to score, but none came to fruition. Finally, in overtime Zane Uqaily drew a 1v1 in the box and was able to get the P.K. and Darmelio finished it off.
“It’s always fun to get a walkoff P.K. in overtime,” Snyder said.
The Mohigans (10-3-1) will face Brooke for the sectional championship Thursday night after the Bruins beat John Marshall 13-0 in their semifinal matchup Tuesday. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
