STAR CITY — With the installation of Star City’s new pavilion comes a new weekly event to the town of Star City — a local farmers market.
“We wanted to start using this thing,” Star City Mayor Herman Reid said of the new pavilion, along Monongahela River.
He and the Star City Council decided a farmers market would be a great way to use the new pavilion and show off what the town has to offer.
Reid said the first farmers market will be from 3-8 p.m. Aug. 14 at the pavilion, near Tugboat Junction in Star City, and every Friday thereafter.
According to Reid, the weekly market will last until “probably October.”
The “eight or 10” vendors at the initial market include many residents of Morgantown and the surrounding areas, who will be selling homemade candles, maple syrup, locally butchered meat and items crafted through woodworking.
Star City Councilman Todd Gregg said there will also be food trucks at the event. He added that the Wow Factory will be at the first farmers market offering free crafting stations.
Gregg said there will be no setup fees or charges for participating vendors.
“This is not only a way of bringing people into the town [of Star City], but a way of giving back to the vendors [during the pandemic].”
Reid said all of the vendors are excited to be a part of this event.
“We’re late in the game here. …” Reid said. “We’ve never had anything nice enough to do this, and now we do. My council and I want to give back to Star City.”
Gregg sees the event as not only a way to give back to the community, but also as a way to bring residents together to “have an enjoyable Friday evening with [their families].”
Reid added that he hopes social distancing measures will be enforced by members of the community due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This includes individuals in attendance wearing masks or facial coverings and maintaining a distance of six feet from others.
“We’re relying on people to be safe, to be smart,” he said.
Reid also encourages any Morgantown area residents, as well as interested individuals who live outside Monongalia County, to attend the weekly farmers markets. He also made a general invitation to “anyone who has a garden, who has stuff they wanna sell.”Those interested in participating as a vendor during the Star City Farmers Markets, should contact Star City Hall at 304-599-3550.
