MORGANTOWN — One person is dead after a collision on Grafton Road at the intersection of Scott Avenue on Monday afternoon.
The car vs. motorcycle crash was reported to MECCA 911 at 2:42 p.m.
When The Dominion Post arrived on scene, emergency personnel were performing CPR on a person who appeared to be the driver of the motorcycle.
Eventually, CPR stopped and the person’s body was covered with a white sheet.
Despite the attempted medical intervention, the driver of the motorcycle was pronounced dead on scene by medical personnel, Morgantown Communications Director Andrew Stacy said.
“The initial investigation determined that a silver BMW was traveling north on Grafton Road attempting to turn left onto Scott Avenue,” Stacy said. “The motorcycle was traveling south on Grafton Road. The vehicles collided as the BMW crossed the south bound lane. The collision resulted in the driver of the motorcycle being thrown from the motorcycle.”
The BMW driver was not taken to the hospital, Stacy said.
The vehicles involved were a silver BMW 325i and a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with New York plates.
There was a motorcycle-sized impact mark just in front of the BMW’s front passenger door and its airbags did deploy.
The BMW was on Scott Avenue as if it had been traveling towards the old Ramada Inn with heavy front-end damage. The motorcycle was in the middle of the intersection with what appeared to be its driver not far in front of it. The motorcyclist’s helmet was about 80 feet away from them.
Traffic was briefly stopped on Grafton Road southbound but police directed people traveling in that direction onto Scott Avenue and around the wreck.
The Morgantown Police Department, Morgantown Fire Department and Mon EMS responded.
The crash is still under investigation.
