MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following Gov. Jim Justice canceling face-to-face schooling throughout the rest of the academic year, the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission called off the remainder of the state basketball tournaments and spring sports seasons.
“The WVSSAC agrees and supports the decision of the Governor and Superintendent [W. Clayton] Burch. For the safety of our students, schools and the communities, this was the right decision,” the commission’s release said. “This is an extremely difficult time for our students, coaches, schools and communities. West Virginians are a resilient group who will overcome this virus and call problems that come with it.”
Though all spring teams in Morgantown are affected, the University boys’ and girls’ basketball teams will not be able to fight for their final Class AAA titles as the two groups will be reclassified as quad-A starting next season. Further, the boys’ team is missing out on its chance to make history as the only Morgantown-area team to win back-to-back titles.
The 3-weeks summer practices, set for June, have not been canceled yet, and the WVSSAC will update athletes and coaches as the situation progresses.
