William James “Bill” Mayfield, 91, of Grafton passed away on Monday, March 23, 2020, at Taylor Health Care Center, Grafton. He was born in Preston County, on Aug. 5, 1928. He is the son of the late Clifford and Mary Ann Bollinger Shingleton. Bill was married for 72 years to the love of his life, Dorothy Lee Bolton Mayfield, who survives.
He was a Veteran of the United States Army, serving during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a long time member of the Fetterman United Methodist Church. Bill worked at the B&O Railroad, the Department of Highways and retired from Fourco Glass. His hobbies were hunting, especially mushrooms, fishing, golfing and being outdoors. He was a member of the VFW Post #12 Grafton. He would eat anything or at least try it. He loved to tell jokes and make people laugh and smile. He could fix anything, or at least try. Bill especially loved being with and making memories with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bill is also survived by four children, Sandra (Dwayne) Dawson, of Colorado, Dianna Cesa, of Morgantown, James (Donna) Mayfield and Terry (Kay) Mayfield, both of Grafton; ten grandchildren, Deanna Dawson, Denine (Jake) Dawson, Deveny Dawson and partner Rachana, Renee (Steven) Keener, Dominick (Sarah) Raschella, Jennifer Bush, Jamie (Doug) Kyle, Lori (Alan) Dye, Ryan (Angela) Mayfield and Bethany (Keith) Powell; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Connie Shingleton, two brothers, Gene Shingleton and Rick (Vickie) Shingleton.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gary Cesa, and sister-in-law, Liz Shingleton.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Residents Council Fund at the Taylor County Care Center, 1 Hospital Drive Grafton, WV 26354, where he received excellent and loving care.
Friends may call at Bartlett Funeral Home, 202 McGraw Ave. Grafton from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, March 27. Private Funeral Services will be held with Pastor David Bess officiating. Interment will be at the WV. National Cemetery.
