Inmate dies at federal prison, USP Hazelton

BRUCETON MILLS — An inmate was unresponsive at USP Hazelton today, according to a press release.

The death was not related to the COVID-19 virus, according to the release.

Jose Mejia-Rangel was found at about 2:30 a.m. Life saving measures were initiated immediately by responding staff. Staff requested emergency medical services and life-saving efforts continued. Mejia-Rangel was subsequently pronounced dead by EMS personnel.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation was notified. No staff or other inmates were injured and at no time was the public in danger.

Mejia-Rangel, 43, was sentenced in the Middle District of Florida to 3 1/2 years for being found in the United States after a deportation action and aggravated identity theft. He had been in custody at United States Penitentiary Hazelton since Jan. 7.

USP Hazelton is a high- security facility that currently houses 1,246 male offenders in Bruceton Mills.
