Cupcake Wars at St. Mary Catholic Church

Thursday marked the 108th birthday of Girl Scouts, and area troops celebrated with cupcakes, friendly competition and by giving back.

Dozens of scouts gathered at St. Mary Catholic Church on Thursday evening, after collecting items for Mission West Virginia. The nonprofit recruits foster families and provides life skills education as well as various other resources.

“Mission West Virginia requested toiletry and personal hygiene items that will be sent to kids when they go to a new home,” said Christine Hayhurst Davis, an area troop leader.

The scouts also wrote inspirational cards to send with the care packages.

“We wanted the kids entering the foster care system to know that there are people thinking about them,” she added.

For the second part of the celebration, the young women participated in a cupcake competition. Awards were given at each Scout level — Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadet, Senior and Ambassador.

“This is a way to do something in service of the community and is something fun for the girls,” Davis said.
