MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The West Virginia baseball team fell to Illinois, 2-1, at the Brittain Resorts Invitational at TicketReturn.com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Sunday afternoon.
In the squad’s first of two games on the day, freshman left-handed pitcher Jake Carr threw a complete game in a tough-luck loss, allowing just two runs on five hits in 8.0 innings of work. The St. Albans, W.Va., native struck out three and didn’t issue a walk in 85 pitches.
Despite the setback, the Mountaineers outhit the Illini, 7-5.
Carr retired Illinois (3-3) in order in the first and third innings, before he allowed his first hit in the fourth. Then, the Illini hit a two-run homer to left, taking a 2-1 lead in the process.
Zarbnisky went 4 for 4 with a run scored in the loss, while Doanes finished with two hits. Freshman outfielder Victor Scott also singled for WVU.
Coastal Carolina 14, WVU 2
CONWAY, S.C. — The West Virginia baseball team fell, 14-2, at Coastal Carolina in the Brittain Resorts Invitational finale Sunday evening at Springs Brooks Stadium.
The Mountaineers took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning before allowing the host Chanticleers to score runs in the first and second to grab momentum. Coastal Carolina (4-3) went on to plate four runs in the seventh and eight in the eighth to break the game open.
WVU (5-3) finished with two runs on eight hits, while Coastal tallied 14 runs on 13 hits. The Mountaineers committed two errors, to the Chanticleers’ four.
“We’re still trying to figure it out; we’re not going to panic by any means,” WVU coach Randy Mazey said. “It’s a long season, and we know we’re going to get better as the season goes – there’s never been a season where we haven’t done that.”
